LA CRUZ

The tenth canton of the Guanacaste province has borders to the north with Nicaragua, to the south with Liberia. Conformed by the districts of Santa Cecilia, La Garita, Santa Elena and La Cruz. Known as the Sun´s cradle for showing wonderful and impressive sunsets which may be observed from the different look out points or from the iconic beaches of the area like Rajada or Junquillal.

La Cruz is characterized by having archeological, geological, natural, cultural, and historical attractions. Which most of them are located along the coast of the La Cruz Coastal Touristic Corridor, that allows to connect all the areas, population centers and touristic attractions in one touristic space.

In this beautiful zone two sites with great reputation like Bahia Junquillal Wildlife Refuge and Marine Management Area Bahia Santa Elena are found, protected areas with huge biological and touristic resources, without a doubt are unique.

BAHÍA JUNQUILLAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

Bahía Junquillal Wildlife Refuge is a protected area located 20 kilometers from the city of La Cruz, ideal for the native flora and fauna lovers as well as for all the ones who enjoy camping near the ocean. Here you can enjoy different recreational activities like hiking, swimming, snorkeling and boat rides. Also, on high season or holidays you can sample delicious local gastronomy at the little sustainable beach market, which takes place there.

MARINE AREA OF MANAGEMENT BAHIA SANTA ELENA

Located north of Península de Santa Elena, in Santa Elena district exactly, it is an important site for the conservation of different species, also for being one of the national sites with greater geological characterization, because is surrounded or constituted by geological formations from thousands of years. According to the Conservation Area of Guanacaste, in 2018, this area is formed by peridotites partially serpentine and intrusive bodies, which makes it special.
